Upgrading cyphers on the fly

This page was made by comparison of cyphers in the Numenera Corebook and Numenera Discovery books. It helps to upgrade cyphers from Technology Compendium on the fly. It uses cyphers as examples. Artefacts can be upgraded in the same way.

General fixes

  1. Numenera Lore → Understanding Numenera
  2. Ranges: 6.1m → 6m, 9.1m → 9m
  3. Same level or lower → Cypher level or lower
  4. Modified by one step → Eased or hindered
  5. Range of 200 feet [61 m] → Very long range

Duration of 28 hours almost always remains unchanged.

MAX is calculated as the maximum level that you can get from the dice roll. For example, for 1d6+2 cypher, MAX is 8, MAX-2 is 6.

Easy cypher's power up: Improve cypher’s effect for MAX-2 level.

No duration → Set minutes/hours per cypher level

Examples:

Static duration → Set duration per cypher level

The lower border should be equal (or around) old duration. If there is some value (damage or armor) AND duration, then duration (not value) is increased by cypher level. Examples:

Armor → Increase armor for MAX-1 level
